Too many have lost the skill of learning. They assume they know what they need to know to get through their hectic days. All too often they find that what they’ve learned has become outdated and no longer applies to life. They soon get replaced by someone who knows more because he has kept abreast of new knowledge and developments. Learning is not difficult if the right techniques are implemented. If you follow them, you will realize more success and have more happiness than the majority who just get by on what little they know.
The Need for Discipline
Before anything can be learned, the mind needs the skill to focus on the material that needs to be learned. The mind of the average man and woman is a jumble of scattered thoughts filled with worries and fears. A stressed mind is a confused mind and can’t concentrate on what needs to be learned. An undisciplined mind translates to a disorganized lifestyle. Before you can hope to learn anything, you need to learn how to discipline that gray matter in your skull so it can devote full attention to absorbing new knowledge.
A Willingness to Learn
No expert knows everything about his chosen career. Discoveries occur daily that lead to a new understanding of how things work. Whatever your chosen field, if your mind is closed to learning about new breakthroughs, your worth to your company is limited. You need to have an open mind and be willing to absorb new knowledge as it comes along. A willingness to learn also means being willing to throw out those antiquated theories that could keep you from advancing through life.
Repetition
It’s an important key to memory improvement. The mind can easily forget facts and figures unless they are recalled and reinforced. It’s necessary to practice what you learn, daily, if it is something you must remember. You can’t become a professional golf player if you don’t reinforce what you learn through constant practice. Repetition helps discipline the mind so it can focus on learning without distractions getting in the way.
Learning as a Creative Challenge
The only way to remember and learn anything is by turning it into a challenge. Many people have the typical “one-track mind” that is just enough to get them through their day. But the mind needs stimulation if it is to be used at full capacity. Stimulation means employing the senses. Few people can recall what they learn because they don’t employ emotions into the learning process. Creativity and the use of imagination helps the mind better retain what is being learned. Children are like sponges. They learn quickly as they use their senses in the process. If you can make learning challenging and fun, you will remember far more and for longer periods.
Learning Out of the Box
If all you ever study is what pertains your career, your life will be dull. People have hobbies that don’t relate to their careers as they find stimulation in those hobbies. To keep your mind sharp and improve your learning skills, you should be engaging in something unrelated to your field of expertise. Read biographies and self-help books. Try to learn a new language or learn to play golf. Any kind of activity stimulates the mind and improves learning skills.
The Importance of Good Health
Constant learning is impossible if you’re tired, irritable or stressed. Factors such as diet, exercise, environmental pollutants reduce the ability to effectively learn. You can’t stay sharp if you subsist on a diet of burgers, fries and cola. The best you can do for yourself before you take on any task that requires your full attention, is address those factors that interfere with learning.
Improving learning skills is so important in today’s fast paced world that demands you stay competitive. All successful people are learners. If you want success and all the things life has to offer, take the time to master the ability to learn.
